Why are They so Different? |

When tenrecs first came to Madagascar, there were no other insectivores that could become better adapted than them. There was no other competition for the niches they could fill. They were able to evolve differently, filling niches that shrews, otters, porcupines and other insectivores fill in North America. That’s why some tenrecs are so similar to North American insectivores. There was no relation when they evolved, but they were filling the same niches, and adapted in the same way. For example, Hedgehog tenrecs, believed by some people to be cousins of hedgehogs, only appear to be the same because they share the same niche. | ![]() |
